Re: LPD All District
I don't recall a year when there wasn't some controversy surrounding the all-district and POY choices. So, again, I'm not surprised.
No doubt some will agree with Vanover as POY, some will disagree as do I. I think in its very essence, the POY should be the best basketball player in the district, region, etc. To me, it means more than stats or career scores. Some players will produce unbelievable stats in part because they are really all their team has.
I think some are looking at certain players and basing the choice on the player's contributions to their individual teams. Being the most valuable player on your team doesn't necessarily mean you're the best player in your district or region.
Is Vanover the MVP on Clintwood's team? No question about it. Is he one of the best players in the LPD? Definitely. Should he be all-district? Yes. Is he the best basketball player in the LPD? Not in my opinion.

Re: LPD All District
Im not taking anytjing away from anyone, Im just asking about your logic. I played with a guy who had a lot of points, high percentage of shooting, it was much better than 50%, but Id say the furthest shot he took was 4 ft from the basket.

Re: LPD All District
I see where you are coming from and we also have Ethan who was in the mid to upper 40% and he plays post...but Begley doesn't play post much at all...most of those shots were mid-range jumpers and some 3's....so thats what so impressive to me

Re: LPD All District
Look at the bright side LPDers. You don't have to worry about this being a 10 page topic since GC left the LPD and someone got awards that didn't deserve them.
raider13- I admire the fact that you stood up to 3 or 4 people. Good to see Burton as the outcast again now that GC is gone.
Everyone else- It's not bias if he backed it up with stats. Don't scream bias or it is just his opinion when this whole board is full of opinions. Just because his opinion differs, don't discredit him nor the argument.
That is why this board is here, to express the opinions of those of us who don't write in the paper or have another outlet.

Re: LPD All District
And all of us have the right to retort against his argument/opinion. That's the key factor a lot of people have forgotten on this board lately--everyone's opinion is up for discussion, and if you truly believe in your opinion/thought, it's your job as the person who posted it to stick up for it. It's not an "everyone's out to get me", it's a discussion and raider13's been in the middle of a lot of them lately. Usually, the person who's opinion gets debunked more often than not starts going on about getting picked on or singled out, when it's simply that they haven't defended their POV very well.
Now--let me retort his point re: Begley and now Stewart. Two pretty good players on the same team. They split buckets, points, rebounds, and other stats, and were on a more talented team than Vanover was overall...so they took heat off of each other and opened up the court for them and their teammates to do better and win more ballgames. The game became easier for the both of them.
Vanover had no one else really to help out. Nick Robinson's a pretty good guy on the boards & an adequate post defender, but that was about it. Vanover was going against double/triple teams all year long, and still put up the stat line that was listed for him earlier. That's more impressive to me than other pretty good players having success when they play with other good players.
Let's pose this question up for debate--take any other player off of any other team in the LPD, and have them switch places with Vanover. Who could have got the stats that he got with that same supporting cast, and could they have led Clintwood to more than 2 overall wins. My money's on the conclusion that no other player could have done a better job in said situation than Vanover did.
